After that, everyone in the room cried.

By the time we calmed down, the tea had turned cold. Realizing it, we laughed at ourselves and spent the rest of the afternoon calmly eating cheesecakes and drinking the tea that we reheated.

At one point, my father brought an album from his room.

It was the first time I’ve seen it. The cover looked old; its blue color must have looked way more vibrant in the past.

“This is Nozomi’s memento.”

He stroked its cover fondly.

“Do you want to take a look, Yuuma? There’s a picture of your real father here.”

My heart jumped.

There was a picture of my real father here. The father that I had never even met.

He placed the album on the table, leaving the decision whether I look at it or not to me.

Nervously, I flipped the album open.

“Your real father was…how could I put this? He was a man with quite the personality…”

When I saw his face, I was astonished. Even Suzuno let out a soft exclamation after seeing it.

‘Ah, I knew it…’

The back of my nose started to itch. The tears that should have dried up started to flow from my eyes again.

I could still remember his voice by heart. I could still remember the last words he said to me on that day.

‘Goodbye, Yuuma-kun. Know that I love you with all my heart…’

In the picture, my real father had a strange haircut.

Round, shaggy, it looked exactly like a bird’s nest.

An afro. The haircut didn’t suit his dull face at all.

I closed the album. Then I hugged it. Tightly. Forcefully. Hoping that my body warmth could reach the departed people who were now trapped inside those pictures.

‘I always thought that it’s weird. He said things like ‘I’ve been watching over you’ and ‘I love you’ to me.’

The last time I saw his face in that sky blue train, I noticed that his face was familiar. Now I realized why that was the case.

He looked just like me.

I wiped my tears.

‘Seriously, what the hell. If you’re my father, then you should just say it from the start. Why were you pretending to be a shinigami all this time…’
