Childhood Friends Special Training

It was the morning of the next day, after we had spent a lot of time running around gathering materials for the FPS game. It was still 5:30 in the morning, and it’s getting hot as the sun rises.
“Well then, take care of me, Miyu.”
“I’m not really sure about this, cause I only read it in a book, you know…?”
“You don’t have to worry about that.”
We’re talking as we warm up on the grounds below our apartment.
Today I’m going jogging with Miyu, or rather, I’m training with her. She showed me the difference in our physical strength yesterday, so I decided to go for a jog to keep her from worrying too much.
However, I don’t know how to run, and I’m afraid I’ll hurt myself unnecessarily, so I asked Miyu to run with me.
“Then, we’re going to run now, but don’t overdo it, okay?”
“I’ll try not to as much as possible.”
“No, it’s important to pace yourself, so if you’re having a hard time, just tell me.”
“O-Okay…”
I’m not even close to Miyu when it comes to jogging or other sports, so I just have to hang my head obediently.
I started running for a few minutes. I felt like I was going awfully slow, or that I couldn’t catch my breath.
“Is it really necessary to go so slow like this?”
“If you can’t catch your breath, you’re not running at the right pace. So you have to find a comfortable pace first.”
“I see.”
“A good rule of thumb is to be able to talk like this while running.”
The pace was more like a brisk walk than a run. But I guess that’s because Miyu says so.
As we ran, I could feel my insides warming up little by little. We’re surrounded by trees, so the breeze felt good.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine, but my body feels warm.”
“That’s the way it is~”
I could see that Miyu’s keeping pace with me. I don’t think she’s been jogging for very long.
After running for a while, I could feel my body getting more comfortable and used to it. I thought it was too easy, but it wasn’t. I was running at the right pace.
“You have to keep your body in its center when you run.”
“Center?”
“Here, watch the way I run.”
She picked up her pace a little then watched Miyu running ahead of me. Her posture was straight, and her body didn’t wobble from side to side or up and down, or rather, the center of her body was always in the same place.
Imitating Miyu, I tried to straighten my back and be conscious of maintaining my posture. But it was not easy.
“You’re putting too much pressure on your shoulders. You need to relax more~”
“Ah, you’re right…”
Now that she mentioned it, I noticed that my shoulders are up and I was straining it.
“If you just try to get your posture right all of a sudden, you’ll end up putting too much pressure on your shoulders.”
“I’ve noticed that…”
“That’s why, try to relax your shoulders~”
Following her advice I tried to relax my shoulders.
“That’s it~ that’s it~”
Miyu acts like a gym teacher now. It was funny when I thought of her that way.
“What are you laughing at?”
“Nothing, I just thought that you were like a gym teacher.”
“J-Jeez, I don’t know what you’re talking about…”
I couldn’t see her expression because she was running ahead of me, but she seemed embarrassed of what I said. Which was unusual for the pushy Miyu.
As I was thinking about this, we had already passed the halfway point of the 5.4km course. It’s only been 15 minutes since we started running.
“Huh? That’s surprisingly fast.”
It was much harder before, and my pace was much slower.
“Once you get the hang of it, you don’t have to waste your stamina when you’re moving your body.”
“You’re right, I can feel it.”
I didn’t know that just being aware of my pace and posture would make such a difference.if that’s the case, the second half would be easy. I thought so, as I kept running.
“Ryu-kun, your pace is getting a little faster.”
“Huh, really?”
I hadn’t been aware of that at all.
“When your body gets used to it, it picks up the pace on its own, try to control that.”
“You mean I have to slow down?”
“That’s right, just a little bit slower than you’d like.”
I did as I was told and slowed down to what seemed like an easy pace.
After doing so I noticed that my breathing had become calmer.
“Aah~ I see, I was out of breath earlier.”
“Un! That’s why you have to pay attention to your breathing.”
“Got it, Sensei!”
I tried to joke a little.
“M-Mou~ stop it…”
“I’m just kidding~”
As I was told, I focused on my breathing and found that even though my body seemed to be relaxed, if I increased my pace, I would breathe too fast, and even if I slowed down considerably, I found that I was breathing more than when I was walking.
I see, breathing was really important when jogging, wasn’t it?
“I understand now that the way you breathe is really important.”
“I’ve heard that marathoners are very creative in their breathing techniques.”
“What about you, Miyu?”
“I’m also devising in my own style.”
Miyu was still breathing calmly while we talked like this.
After that, there was only 100m left to go.
“Let’s pick up the pace, okay?”
“Are you sure about that?”
“It’s important to feel the change when you try to pick up the pace~”
Then we tried to run at a slightly slower pace than full speed. As I expected, I felt that breathing was getting harder and harder, but the remaining distance was getting closer and closer: 90m, 70m, 50m, 30m…
“All right, we’re here~”
The time was 30 minutes, 10 minutes shorter than last time.
“Good work~! Take a deep breath until you calm down.”
Inhale and exhale slowly for a while.
“Then we’ll stretch. If you don’t do it right, your muscles will get sore, so be careful, okay?”
“All right.”
Imitating Miyu’s movements, I bend and stretch my ankles and knees.
“Okay, that’s all~!”
She was consistently focused on teaching me while we jog, but yet she was calmly breathing. I don’t think I could do this kind of things If I was on my own.
“Hey, It’s impossible to do this kind of thing if you’re doing it all by yourself, so how did you do it, Miyu?”
“To be honest, I didn’t do it well in my first time, either. So I read books, ran, reviewed, and repeated.”
She said it like it was nothing, but I knew it was not that easy.
“I always thought that you’re intuitive…”
“That’s how I am when it comes with programming, but not much when it comes with other stuff. I just researched for a more efficient training method.”
Her words were filled with a sense of reality that oozed from her experience, that I honestly thought it was amazing.
“I have so much respect for you, Miyu…”
“W-What’s wrong…?”
“I really mean it, I can’t really do the things like you just did.”
The way she fidgeted when she was praised was something I didn’t usually see in Miyu, and it was so adorable.
After that, I learned another different side of Miyu.
