I Was Hired As A Tutor By A Cute Little Devilish Junior - Chapter 43 Change
After seeing Kanade off, I headed to Shiina’s house like usual.
After studying hard during the morning, I had a homemade lunch by Shiina.
“What’s on the menu today?”
“Today, for a senpai who loves tofu, it’s a gorgeous tofu three-piece set: tofu steak, chilled tofu and tofu salad!”
I couldn’t help but let out an uncharacteristic squeal of admiration at Shiina, who wore a cute apron and told me so.
I’ve often seen her reading cookbooks during breaks from her studies lately, and before I knew it, she was able to make something like that.
And most importantly, she was focusing on tofu dishes that I would like.
I was glad that she remembered that I liked tofu, but the fact that she was making it just for me was the most touching.
“Is it okay? Are you sure you want to do this?”
“What are you talking about, Senpai? I’m making this because I want you to eat it.”
“Well, sure if you put it that way…”
“From my point of view, this is also Murakami-senpai’s pay. So, please eat it, Senpai,” Shiina tells me as she puts her hands on her hips.
I can’t believe it.
Shiina, with her hair done up, apron and ladle in hand, looks like a newlywed wife, and I’m thrilled to be alone with her.
The finished dishes looked so delicious that I almost started to drool.
Each of the tofu dishes had bright colors on the clean white background of the tofu, making them even more appetizing.
I clasped my hands together to express my gratitude, and as soon as I put it in my mouth, the taste of happiness spread.
“Shiina, this is really super good~”
“Fufufu, you’re talking in a different way than usual.”
This was probably what it felt to lose your vocabulary because it was so wonderful.
My mouth was filled with so much happiness that I really don’t even know how to describe it.
After a full meal of tofu, I decided to take a break and played a video game with Shiina.
It was already a complete diversion from the original purpose of tutoring, but this was also what Shiina wanted.
I don’t have many hobbies myself, let alone club activities, so tutoring Shiina was not a hardship at all, even if it is on weekends.
That was how I ended up at Shiina’s house on my days off.
I was sure even Shiina and I have grown tired of studying every day, both on weekdays and weekends.
Of course, it wasn’t that we were bored of being together. It was simply that we spent too much time studying.
That was why on these afternoons, the two of us played games together to pass the time.
“Gah, Senpai, your tactics are too underhanded.”
“Fu. I’ll do whatever it takes to attack Shiina.”
“Ah, no, you can’t do that…! Hyanh!?”
Shiina’s screams were in vain, and the character she was controlling was blown out of the field, and the screen showed a grand announcement that I had won.
If you were to cut out just my voice and Shiina’s, you’d think there was a disreputable atmosphere in the air, but that’s the charm.
Though I couldn’t say anything about it because the person in question was trying so hard that she ended up screaming.
All I could do was trust in the soundproofing of the apartment where Shiina lives.
“Fufufu. You’re not even close yet, Shiina.”
“Senpai, surely you could take it a little easy on me. Boo.”
“That would be boring. Here, what’s the next stage?”
“…Same place as now.”
“Then we start again.”
This was a game that I used to play a lot, and when Shiina and I went to buy a game to pass the time on weekends, we found it and bought it.
I have more experience in this game than Shiina, so I have a much better chance of winning.
However, Shiina seemed to have a competitive nature, and we had a lot of fun playing together.
“Speaking of which, Senpai. You’re in a good mood today, aren’t you?”
“Oh, you think so?”
“Yes, you’ve been smiling since you came to my house today. Did something happy happen to you?”
“Don’t be surprised to hear this, okay? Actually, Kanade finally made a friend.”
“…Eh, is that all?”
“And she’s going out with her friend today. That alone made me happy.”
I reported it to Shiina in a happy mood, but she looked at me delicately, as if she didn’t quite get it.
“What’s that look?”
“No…I just thought that Senpai is still a siscon after all.”
“Oh, come on.”
If that was the case, it is a natural reaction for an older brother.
Although she is an extremely spoiled girl, I love Kanade as much as she loves me as a family member.
That’s why it was only natural for us to share each other’s joy.
“Senpai. Your face is getting relaxed.”
“It’s just your imagination.”
I wonder how Kanade is doing right now.
She said she was going to go shopping after lunch.
As I was picturing this scene of Kanade, the character I was controlling slipped and fell out of the game.
＊ ＊ ＊
After spending the evening at Shiina’s house, I came home a little early because of Kanade.
Kanade hadn’t come home yet, and I was watching TV in the living room, feeling a little nervous, when I heard the front door open and Kanade came into the living room.
“Welcome back, Kanade.”
“I’m home, Nii-san.”
After exchanging these words, Kanade walked right up to me sitting on the sofa.
I was expecting her to immediately climb on my lap as she always does, but she seemed to be hesitating.
I wondered why she was so hesitant, but when I called out to her by tapping my knee, she slowly climbed into my lap.
I hugged her, somewhat relieved that she was still as sweet as ever.
“How was it, did you have fun?”
“Yes, it was a lot of fun and I learned a lot of new things.”
“Oh, I see.”
I patted her on the head and praised her for a good job.
Kanade hugged me tightly while nudging me.
But the feeling of it made me feel uncomfortable.
It was the same old skinship with Kanade.
The same old hug with Kanade.
But the arm around my back seemed to be filled with a different kind of power.
“What is it, Nii-san?”
“…Did something happen?”
When I asked, Kanade tightened her lips and gave me a sad and lonely expression.
Sometimes, when she has a bad day, she makes this face.
And although she usually doesn’t hide things from me, she’s patient and doesn’t let out much of what she doesn’t like.
“Did you have a fight with Momoka-chan?”
“No, I didn’t…It’s not Momoka’s fault. It’s just…”
Perhaps it was something she stubbornly didn’t want to say, but Kanade looked very pained as she untied her arms from behind me and raised herself up.
Then, with a regretful look on her face, she got off my lap and walked back to her room on the second floor.
I could only watch her go, feeling the faint warmth escape into the air.
And from that day on, the way Kanade treated me changed completely.
After dinner, I took a bath.
Usually, she would join me while I was taking a bath, and in the worst cases, she would even join me from the changing room itself.
Since then, however, Kanade never once tried to take a bath with me.
After the bath, we were relaxing in the living room.
It used to be my job to dry Kanade’s hair after she got out of the bath, but since then she asked mom to do it every day.
She doesn’t barge into my room before we go to bed, or to have me give her the usual affectionate skinship, or even the “good-bye” kiss.
However, as she changed her behavior, Kanade looked incredibly regretful, and it bothered me that she seemed to be holding back and keeping her distance from me.
…Yes, as if someone had told her to do so.
After a week or so of agonizing, one day.
Kanade collapsed with a high fever.
